2022 Mazda CX-30: Features we find most impressive | Zigwheels

KUALA LUMPUR: It was only recently that the Malaysia auto arena got yet another electric vehicle, this time from Japanese automaker, Mazda. Called the MX-30, the EV was introduced by automaker’s official distributor Bermaz Motor Trading Sdn Bhd.

The Mazda MX-30 is the brand’s first battery-electric vehicle and is its 3rd gen mode after Mazda 3 and MX-30.

Once launched, the 2022 MX-30 EV will be offered in two variant options, Mid and High. For now, Mazda Malaysia has opened up the car’s ordering books and has announced a starting price of RM 198,780 for the new EV. With each purchase customers will get a 5-year/100,000km manufacturing warranty (whichever comes first) and up to 8-year/160,000 km EV battery coverage.

Before we start to unwind the EV’s most interesting features, let’s first discuss its power configuration, as at the end, a smooth and relaxed commuting is all expected from a car.

The MX-30 benefits from the brand’s new e-Skyactiv powertrain that offers the car pure electric power. The lightweight and powerful e-SKYACTIV e-motor generates a maximum power of 143 hp along with a peak torque of 271 Nm. The drive is sent to the front wheels via a single-speed gearbox.

The floor mounted 35.5 kWh, 355 volt lithium-ion battery powers the motor and offers the EV a maximum operating range of 199 km on a full charge. Also, this configuration enables the EV to complete the century sprint in just 9.7 seconds and attain a top speed of 140 kmph.

2022 Mazda MX-30: Most interesting features

Freestyle doors: The EV features RX-8-like ‘Freestyle’ doors wherein the front and rear doors open at the center. In Mazda’s view it will allow customers to “invent new and creative ways of using the car." Just like the Tesla Model X, the Freestyle doors open to 82 degrees in the front and 80 degrees at the rear.

Lighting setup: Part of the EV’s standard kit is its impressive lighting kit that includes auto LED headlights, LED daytime running lights, LED Signature rear combination lights, LED fog lamps, and LED reverse light.

Driver supporting gears: Offering the driver all the information needed is a 7-inch color TFT LCD display and a windshield projected heads-up display that allows the one behind the wheels all the info needed without having to move the eyes from the road ahead. The steering wheel mounted controls, paddle shifters also add to the detail.

Infotainment display: Taking care of the driver and onlookers entertainment needs is an 8.8-inch windscreen display with the next-gen Mazda Connect system. It also offers Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity.

Floating center console: Mazda CX-30 features a dual-tier center console that apart from being functional is an interesting site to look at. For the former, it provides the owner access to several functions together with the 7.0-inch climate control touch screen. As for the latter, the lower part is covered in high-quality materials like corks, threads, recycled plastic bottles, adding an extra element of sustainable style.

Sound system: Available with the EV is a premium Bose system, complete with 12 high-performance speakers and BassMatch, Centerpoint, AudioPilot, and SurroundStage technologies.

Comfortable seats: The electric SUV features super comfortable seats that in the top-spec model get 8-way power driver seat with 2-way lumbar adjustment, two-position memory and heated function.

Adaptive LED headlight (ALH): This system enhances night time visibility and keeps the driver vigilant by combining three techs, Highway Mode, Glare-free High Beam, and Wide-range Low Beams.

Adaptive Front-lighting System (AFS): This system helps the headlight pivot in the direction in which the car turns, thus improving the visibility by manifold.

Blind Spot Monitoring (BSM) & Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA): This system scans the blind spots behind the car, detects unseen vehicles and alerts the driver of the same during lane change or reversing.

Front Cross Traffic Alert (FCTA): It detects vehicles in the front left and right blind spots of the car whenever the MX-30 drives towards an intersection.

Lane Departure Warning System (LDWS): This system monitors the road markings and alerts the driver whenever the car strays from the lane.

Lane Keep Assist System (LAS): This one comes as an add-on to the LDWS, it performs minor steering correction to bring back the EV in the correct lane.

Smart Brake Support (SBS): It reduces or completely eliminates frontal collision by automatically applying the brakes.

Cruising & Traffic Support (CTS): The system helps the EV maintain a constant distance from the vehicle ahead without having the driver use the accelerator or brake pedal.
